NewAthena: a transformational X-ray observatory for the 2030s

NewAthena is a general-purpose, open X-ray observatory selected by ESA as the second Large Mission within its Cosmic Vision programme.

It will combine an unprecedented collecting area, survey capability, and energy resolution. These strengths will enable the astronomical community to explore a broad range of astrophysical topics, to be defined through open calls. Potential areas of study include, among others, accreting compact objects such as black holes across the entire mass spectrum and neutron stars; the hot gas surrounding galaxy clusters; distant gamma-ray bursts; supernova explosions and remnants; stars, white dwarfs, exoplanets and their host stars; and the interstellar medium.
